Palm trees are monocotyledons which have a single embryonic leaf in their seeds. There are over 2,800 species to be found throughout all five continents.

The palms at La Concepcion consists of 86 species distributed among three separate areas: the Historical Garden, which houses a landscaped arrangement comprising thirty specimens, some of which are over 100 years old; the “Palms Collection", an area created in 2002 in which the trees are grouped according to their continent of origin; and the southern section of the garden, which is home to those species which require a warmer climate.
